The way people dwell in the city is under constant transformation. The contemporary
lifestyles of people, and the physical pressures of our cities today are redefining the
conventional perceptions of the way we live in the city. Given a specific site at the
top of Berkeley Tower, at Canary Riverside, at West ferry Circus, at Canary Wharf, the
challenge here is to critically translate contemporary living into a tangible, physical
space - The Penthouse. Typologically, this dwelling space is analogous to the country
house, but here, it's the contemporary 'urban villa'. The Penthouse represents the
idealised space - a space that is perched at the top of a vantage point to capture all the
strategic views of the urban landscape. The task, here, will be to intervene in the
ongoing process of architecture by merging the outside built form with the interior space
- the building shell is complete but not the interior space.
This single stage ideas competition offers young architects and designers an opportunity
to stretch their imagination and offer new ideas towards, forms of space, use of new
materials, integrating eco-friendly ideas, leading to a new understanding of contemporary
dwelling by critically evaluating how architectural space is evolving in the new
Millennium.
As its first major residential development is nearing completion at Canary Wharf, Canary
Riverside is keen to engage architects and designers in a competition leading to a
commission, a design symposium and an exhibition of the short-listed entries.
Through this competition, we hope to develop new ideas for 'Dwelling in the City - Spaces
in the 21st Century.'
Open Ideas Competition Challenge :
This stage of the competition simply challenges the candidates to design the interior
space for the duplex flagship penthouse with a twenty-first century urban lifestyle in
mind. The client scenario for the space is left up to the discretion of the
competitor.
The Site:
Given an existing concrete building shell, the competition will focus on the design of the
interior space of a two-story penthouse apartment at the top of Berkeley Tower - the
tallest in the Canary Riverside development, at Canary Wharf. The penthouses are at
the 21st - 22nd floors, having distant views of central London on one side, and views
beyond the Millennium Dome on the other.
