The Ernesto Caiazza Promosedia Competition
ideas for the design of an european chair

COMPETITION CONDITIONS

1 AIMS
Promosedia SpA announces a competition for ideas for chair design. The aim of the competition is to solicit ideas of quality, creativity and technical feasibility.

2 ELIGIBILITY
The competition is divided into two categories of eligibility.

Category a
- limited to students enrolled in
- Faculties of Architecture which include specific industrial design courses
- Tertiary Design Institutes situated within the European Union.
Entry by a design school, or individual courses of industrial design is also possible.
In such cases the responsible head of the course becomes the single designated person for communications as well as the only person to collect possible awards.

Category b
- limited to young designers under the age of 36 years on 9th September 2000 citizens of member States of the European Union. For both categories, group entry is admissible. In such case participants must designate a group leader by appropriate declaration, signed by each group member, to be attached to the entry. The group leader to be responsible for all purposes to the competition organisers as well as being the only person entitled to collect possible awards. (Member States of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom)

3 UNPUBLISHED DESIGNS
The designs entered must be original and previously unpublished, created expressly for this competition. Non-compliance with such conditions will result in exclusion from the competition or, in case the non-compliance should only be established later, any possible awards shall be cancelled and any prize-money, award, etc must be returned. Decisions by the Panel of Judges is final and are not subject to appeal.

4 ENTRIES
Multiple entries may be submitted. The graphic designs must be presented exclusively on UNI A2 sheets (594 x 420 mm) mounted on stiff cardboard, using any technique or means, in black and white or in colour, which describe the design clearly and completely. Each single design submitted must not exceed four sheets. Submissions must include a drawing to scale and show scale used. A maximum of 5 photographs of a possible model of the design may be attached to the panels.

5 ANONYMITY
Entry must be anonymous. Entries must not bear the name(s) of the designer(s) in any part of the entry, on pain of disqualification. The designer must choose some name, phrase or code of identification, which
must appear on every part, sheet, etc of the submission. The category entered must be shown on the outer cover of the submission, non-compliance means disqualification. The identity of the participant(s) to be specified in a sealed plain envelope bearing only the chosen means of identification and category entered on the outside of the envelope and containing:

category a
- name, surname, address, telephone, fax, possible e-mail
- proof of enrolment in a faculty or institute as specified in art. 2 as above.

category b
- personal declaration including name, date of birth, address, telephone, fax, possible e-mail of the entrant &/or individuals of the group. The envelope must contain details of the group leader if applicable. The sealed envelope to be attached to the submission.

6 CLOSING DATES
All submissions must reach Promosedia SpA, Via Trieste 9/6, - 33044 Manzano (UD) ITALY by 6 p.m. on Friday, 5th May 2000.
Where delivery is by mail or carrier, the postmark or consignment note will be considered proof of compliance.

7 PANEL OF JUDGES,
MEETINGS AND DELIBERATIONS
The Panel of Judges is made up of the following:
- Stefano Giovannoni, designer
- James Irvine, designer
- Augusto Morello, President of I.C.S.I.D.
- Enrico Morteo, journalist
- Giovanni Masarotti, President of Promosedia SpA with the right of co-option by majority, should the need arise for substitutions etc., as well as a Secretary, with no voting rights, to act as administrator and co-ordinator.

The Panel will evaluate the entries submitted in accordance with the competition rules and judge on the basis of originality as well as aesthetic and functional aspects of the submission. 50% of the Panel's members will be considered a quorum for meetings. Decisions are considered valid by a majority of those present. Minutes will be kept of all decisions. The Panel may decide to assign a lesser number of awards than those indicated in art. 9. The Panel may moreover decide to present no awards should no entry be judged valid or worthy of an award.

8 COMPETITION RESULTS
Competition winners will be notified by registered mail within 30 days of the Panel of Judges finalising its decisions.

9 AWARDS
A maximum of 5 entries will be selected from each of the two categories.
Promosedia SpA has allocated a total sum of Euro 5,200 to be divided equally among the selected entries. Promosedia SpA may decide to allocate goods or cash as special recognition to one or more entries independently of the competition outcome, with due regard to  recommendations by the Judges.

10 PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
Presentation will take place during "Promosedia - 24th International Chair Exhibition" to be held in Udine from 9th to 12th September, 2000.

11 USE OF WINNING AND SELECTED DESIGNS
Promosedia SpA is free to use images of the winning or selected designs in any of its public relations and communication initiatives, the sole obligation is acknowledgement of author or authors of the designs.
Promosedia SpA has the right to decide to send photos of the award winning designs for publication to leading specialised international magazines.
Without committing itself, Promosedia SpA foresees the creation of prototypes of the selected designs, to be exhibited during "Promosedia - 24th International Chair Exhibition" (Udine 9th - 12th September 2000).
Promosedia SpA reserves the right to present an exhibition of all or part of the entries &/or prototypes and to bring out a catalogue independently of the outcome of the competition. Such exhibition could subsequently be displayed in other venues without reference or authorisation from the designers.

12 PROPERTY OF ENTRIES IN THE COMPETITION
Entrants may request that their entries be returned. Such requests, at the designer's own cost, must be lodged by fax with Promosedia SpA by 13th October 2000 (fax. No. +39-0432-755316). All entries whose return is not requested by the above date will remain the property of Promosedia SpA. The prototypes will in all cases remain the property of Promosedia SpA.
Promosedia SpA undertakes not to transfer the property to any manufacturing company.

13 MANUFACTURING RIGHTS
Entrants, whether award winners or not, retain property and intellectual rights to their work. Authors of designs which could enter into production, whether after or independently of the competition, retain the right to reach agreements &/or contracts directly with interested manufacturers.
Promosedia SpA will make no claim for any remuneration and will be exonerated from both negotiations between designer and manufacturer and any subsequent controversy which may arise between the parties.

14 ACCEPTANCE OF REGULATIONS
Participation in the competition presupposes total acceptance of these regulations. Personal information submitted will be for use by Promosedia and only for the purposes of the competition. Promosedia SpA, Via Trieste 9/6, 33044 Manzano (UD) ITALY is responsible for the handling of personal data.
