C
LAS website to view video clips of the Challenges for Brazil conference

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at UC Berkeley is pleased to announce that video portions of the Challenges conference, held February 25, 2000, can now be viewed on the Web site, www.clas.berkeley.edu/clas. Also on the site are participant papers and photos from the event. The conference brought together major political figures, scholars and labor leaders from Brazil and the United States to discuss globalization and social issues. The dialogue that ensued was thought-provoking, energetic and surprising. Among the video clips on the site are portions of presentations by: Dr. Ruth Cardoso, First Lady of Brazil; U.S. Representatives David Bonior (D-MI) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA); Brazilian Senator Marina Silva (PT); Minister of Health Jose Serra; Minister of Land Reform Raul Jungmann; R. Thomas Buffenbarger, International President of the International Association of Machinists; and Prof. Cristovam Buarque (PT), former governor of the Federal District.
Additional materials from the conference will be added in the coming weeks.

In addition, a special CLAS newsletter dedicated to the Challenges for Brazil conference will be mailed on April 24th. The newsletter will include extensive excerpts of participants' speeches, as well as analysis of the discussions. Look for other content recently added to the CLAS website: -coverage of the current CLAS lecture series "Mexican Transitions", which center on the upcoming presidential elections in Mexico - an expanded "Chile: Politics and Culture" page - a write-up of Guatemalan lawyer Mynor Melgar's talk on human rights in Latin America.
